Theatrix - Theatre Apprenticeship Programme

Empowering Jamaica’s Next Generation of Theatre Professionals

The Theatre Apprenticeship Programme (TAP) is a transformative initiative designed to equip aspiring theatre artists and technicians with the practical skills, industry insights, and creative confidence needed to thrive in Jamaica’s vibrant cultural sector. Funded by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), this programme bridges the gap between creative expression and professional development, ensuring that participants emerge as well-rounded theatre professionals ready to contribute to Jamaica’s artistic landscape.

What We Offer

  • Hands-On Training
Participants gain real-world experience in crucial behind-the-scenes roles such as lighting, sound design, set construction, stage management, and costume design. Under the guidance of seasoned industry professionals, apprentices learn to bring theatrical productions to life from concept to curtain call.

  • Professional Development
Through specialized workshops and masterclasses, the TAP curriculum covers leadership development, audition techniques, pre-production processes, and career-building strategies. Apprentices acquire the confidence, discipline, and strategic mindset needed to succeed in a competitive industry.

  • Mentorship & Networking
Apprentices receive one-on-one mentorship from accomplished theatre practitioners, fostering connections that support ongoing growth and collaboration. These networks extend beyond the programme, offering participants an invaluable support system and access to future job opportunities.

  • Cultural Enrichment
With a strong emphasis on Jamaican heritage and storytelling, TAP celebrates local narratives and fosters a deeper appreciation for our nation’s diverse cultural expressions. In doing so, participants not only hone their technical skills but also develop a profound respect for the power of theatre as a medium for social commentary and cultural preservation.

Why TAP Matters

  • Industry Growth
TAP directly contributes to the sustainability of Jamaica’s creative and cultural industries by developing a skilled workforce. As more trained professionals enter the theatre sector, local productions become more innovative and competitive on a global stage.

  • Youth Empowerment
By engaging youth and emerging talent, TAP opens doors to meaningful employment and personal development. Apprentices build self-confidence, communication skills, and creative problem-solving abilities that benefit them in any career path.

  • Community Impact
TAP encourages participants to collaborate with local schools, community groups, and cultural organizations, fostering a vibrant ecosystem that drives social cohesion, cultural pride, and economic opportunities within the performing arts.
